But Are You Convinced?

by Jennifer McCay

We've all found ourselves in business situations where we need to be confident, but we lack conviction.

Each of us has a different trigger. Maybe you're giving a speech and someone has asked a disconcerting question. Perhaps you are on the phone with a prospect and suddenly aren't sure that you can deliver what she needs.

Whatever the cause, that lack of confidence can kill your marketing because your prospects want to do business with folks who know their stuff and make them feel confident about their purchase.

When something like this happens ...

Focus your efforts on the services or products you know best. Talking about subjects you know well can really boost your confidence level.

Don't try to be something you're not. If you've never handled that sort of work before, say so. But immediately follow up with examples of related work that you've handled successfully in the past.

Think about 1 of the successful projects you have handled for a client -- or that month in which you were practically on fire, selling more than you had in the last 3 months combined -- and use that energy to fuel your confidence.

Consider all the things you do well before you put yourself into a tough position and "psych yourself up" prior to the meeting. Writing down your qualifications and having a "cheat sheet" will help you stay on track.

Dig deep into your soul and you will find the confidence you need to come across sincerely and powerfully. That's what makes your prospects believe in you!
